Isham Burnett, according to the Texas Big Sandy Project map, had a sawmill in 1854 in Wood County located on the Holly Springs Road. This is probably the same sawmill recorded in the Census of 1860. Johans Burnett's sawmill was d to be a capital investment of $3,000, with $500 invested in 1,000 sawlogs. Three men were employed at a total monthly wage of $36. The sawmill manufactured 200,00 feet of pine lumber valued at $2,000. The wooden overshot wheel was later converted to an iron wheel. James Alexander Stinson, the noted local sawmiller, bought this mill in 1867, giving him two sawmills. See other Stinson entries abut additional information on his operation. The mill continued to be water-powered and milled lumber, ground cornmeal and flour, ginned and pressed cotton under Stinson until 1906. Rowland Gwynne Andrews Lumber Company bought the operation in 1906 and ran it for twenty years. According to The Gilmer Mirror, the Waterman Lumber Company had extensive milling and logging interests in Upshur County at and after the turn of the century. The sawmill site began with the facility of Rowland Gwynne Andrews in 1906. He sold it in 1916 to Waterman Lumber Company, according to "This Everlasting Sand Bed": Cultural Resources Investigations at the Texas Big Sandy Project, Wood and Upshur Counties, Texas.” A company logging tram supported both company's operations. Waterman ran the sawmill until the early 1920s. Andrews Lumber Company also ran a sawmill elsewhere in the county before selling to Waterman Lumber Company. The “Texas Manufacturers” section of the “Roster: Lumbermen's Ass'n of Texas,” in the Southern Industrial and Lumber Review of July 1909, included R. G. Andrews Lumber Company of Winnsborough.
