Historicial Development: James, William, and W. B. Herrington were family members involved in sawmilling ventures in the county from the late 1860s to the 1880s. “The Journal of G. W. Gann” notes that Mr. Gann, as County Surveyor of Angelina County, recorded an entry in which a Mr. William Herrington had indicated to Gann that he “desires to purchase a tract of land on the labor & On its eastern boundary about 1 1/2 miles from Homer upon which to const a steam mill. He and another owns the mill but will have to purchase the land on time if at al [sic]. . . . I must say however that I think it not certain that he will locate the mill in this Co.” James Herrington, in the 1877 Angelina County tax records, had a $1,000 value in tools, sawmill machinery, and the other equipment. The mill was located on the Jason Bridges Grant where a James Hinnington is listed as owning 1,500 acres. James Herrington is not listed in the 1882 tax roll, but his manufacturing tools in 1883 are worth $615.
