Historicial Development: According to W. T. Block, the noted sawmill historian from Nederland, Texas, Burkeville, about two miles from Wiergate, is one of the oldest communities in Newton County. Several forest-related industries have been located at Burkeville, including a possible sawmill around 1909, the name of which has not survived. It may have been the plant of the Buffalo Lumber Company of E. F Montgomery, L. J. Miller, E. A. Griggs, and L. S. McMahon, with an authorized capital of $20,000.
