Historicial Development: J. L. Payton operated a sawmill in Center. He was financed by B. A. Barnes Lumber Company, to whom he owed a $1,000 in 1905; he probably mortgaged his cut to the Barnes' planing mill operations. Southern Industrial and Lumber Review reported that this mill was manufacturing 20,000 feet daily in 1906.
