Historicial Development: G. W. Reid bought the old Palmetto Lumber Company hardwood sawmill two and a half miles south of Oakhurst in 1922. It was described in a San Jacinto County record on July 1, 1922, as “1 complete sawmill plant, with all appliances necessary to operate said sawmill plant, edgers, blacksmith shop. . . . everything appertaining to a sawmill.” In a document of June 12, 1923, this mill's property is described as having the sawmill, wagons, harness sets, and about 100,000 feet of uncut logs at the yard. G. W. Reid owned another mill five miles northeast of Oakhurst during these years.
